The retina is the only part of the human body where blood vessels can be directly observed. Many diseases produce signs that can be observed in the retina, making the observation of this eye layer useful for early diagnosis.
Fundus image is the most common retinal imaging modality for diagnosing ocular diseases due to its cost-effectiveness.
Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a visual complication of diabetes that has become a major cause of blindness in developed countries. It occurs when high blood sugar levels damage the blood vessels in the retina. Early diagnosis is crucial to prevent severe vision loss. However, the disease is asymptomatic in its early stages, requiring diabetic patients to undergo regular eye examinations.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a degenerative disease of the macula that causes a progressive loss in central vision. It is the most common cause of irreversible loss of central vision in elderly people. AMD does not present symptoms in its early stages. Therefore, regular eye examinations are essential for early AMD detection.

There is sufficient scientific evidence demonstrating that it is possible to reduce cases of blindness from these diseases if risk factors are reviewed and treated in a timely manner.
However, the increasing incidence of these diseases and the lack of healthcare resources make manual screening impractical.
